The buying shift in marketing and advertising
Few categories adopt new tools as fast as marketing does. The people who buy martech, ad platforms, and marketing services are, by trade, early adopters of anything that promises an edge — and AI assistants have become a default research surface for them. A CMO scoping a new attribution platform, a growth lead comparing email tools, a brand manager looking for a performance agency: increasingly, the first move is to ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini “what’s the best option for this?” rather than wading through a dozen review-site tabs.
That changes where the buying decision is actually shaped. The old funnel started with a query and a results page you could rank on. The new one often starts with a conversation, and the assistant compresses the entire consideration set into a few named recommendations before the buyer has clicked anything. If your platform or service is in that spoken shortlist, you’re in the deal. If it isn’t, you usually never find out you were left out — there’s no impression, no bounce, no analytics line to investigate.
Why “best [marketing] X” queries are the battleground
Marketing is a category defined by comparison. Buyers don’t ask “what is a CDP” — they already know — they ask “best CDP for a mid-market ecommerce team,” “top performance marketing agencies for SaaS,” “best alternative to [incumbent tool].” Those are exactly the prompts an AI assistant answers with a ranked, named list. Every one of them is a battleground where a finite number of brands get spoken aloud and the rest are invisible.
The problem for most marketing brands is that they have poured years into a website, a blog, and paid acquisition — channels that AI assistants treat as your own marketing, not as independent evidence. When ChatGPT decides which CDP or which agency to name, it isn’t reading your landing page. It’s assembling an answer from how often, and how consistently, your brand shows up as the named option across the wider web. That is a different game than ranking, and it’s the game that decides AI visibility for Marketing & Advertising.
