AI visibility is the service line your clients are about to ask for
The brief has changed. Buyers no longer start every research journey on a blue-link results page — they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini for a recommendation and act on the brands those tools name back. Gartner projected that traditional search engine volume would fall by roughly 25% by 2026 as users shift to AI assistants. For an agency, that is not a threat so much as a new line item: the client who used to ask "are we ranking?" now asks "does ChatGPT mention us?"
Most agencies have already added "Answer Engine Optimization" or "Generative Engine Optimization" to their services page. Putting it on the page and being able to deliver it are two different things. Tracking dashboards tell a client where they stand; they do not change a single input the model reads. What actually moves AI-answer visibility is getting the brand mentioned, in context, across the sources these tools already trust — and that is fulfilment work most agencies are not set up to run in-house.
That is the gap this service fills. You own the client relationship, the strategy and the reporting. We own the placements. You resell a concrete deliverable instead of a dashboard, and you do it at a margin you control.
Why the numbers favour mentions, not links
The reason this works as a productised service comes down to how AI answers are built. In BrightEdge's 2025 analysis of thousands of ChatGPT prompts, ChatGPT mentioned brands 3.2x more often than it cited them — an average of 2.4 brand mentions per answer against just 0.74 clickable citations. The brand name in the answer text, frequently with no link at all, is the surface area buyers actually see. Optimise only for clickable citations and you are ignoring most of where your clients' names could appear.
This is why the product is an unlinked mention, not a backlink or a guest post. Large language models recognise brand entities from text, not just from hyperlinks. A natural reference in relevant content associates the brand with that topic in the model's representation of the web — and repetition of that association across trusted sources is what makes a brand feel like an obvious answer. No link means no link-scheme exposure to manage on your client's behalf, and a far lower unit cost than a paid placement or PR hit.
