Local discovery moved into the chat box
For two decades, “best [service] near me” meant the map pack and ten blue links. That habit is splitting. In BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, the share of consumers using ChatGPT and other generative-AI tools for local recommendations jumped from 6% the previous year to 45% — making AI the third most popular source of business recommendations, behind only Google and Facebook. The same survey found 82% of consumers now read AI-generated review summaries, and 23% are willing to rely on those summaries alone to decide.
For a local or multi-location brand, that is a quiet but real shift in the front door. A buyer who once scrolled a results page and formed their own shortlist now reads a paragraph that already has a shortlist. If your brand is not one of the few names in that paragraph, you are not in the consideration set — and there is no second page to climb onto.
