Product discovery moved into the answer box
For two decades the e-commerce funnel started with a search box and ten blue links, or with a marketplace listing page. That entry point is shifting. Shoppers increasingly open ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI mode and ask a full question — "what's the best electric toothbrush for sensitive gums under $80?" — and read a written recommendation that names a handful of brands. The store visit happens after the shortlist is set, not before.
The traffic data backs this up. Adobe Analytics reported that traffic to U.S. retail sites from generative AI sources rose 693.4% year over year during the 2025 holiday season, the period in which U.S. shoppers spent a record $257.8 billion online. BrightEdge tracked an even steeper 752% year-over-year spike in AI referrals from ChatGPT and Perplexity to e-commerce brands. The base is still smaller than Google or Amazon — but the slope is the story, and it points one direction.
It isn't just a traffic source; it's higher-intent traffic. Adobe found AI-referred shoppers converted 31% more than visitors from other channels. These buyers arrive having already compared options with an assistant, so they land closer to the purchase decision. That makes the AI answer a place where being mentioned is worth more per impression than a generic click.
Why this is different from SEO or marketplace ads
You can win the Google result and still lose the AI answer. Search rankings reward your own pages and your backlinks; an AI assistant assembles its recommendation from what the wider web says about you — review roundups, "best of" listicles, community threads, comparison articles. BrightEdge's analysis of ChatGPT outputs found brands are named roughly three times more often than they're linked, which means the recommendation surface is built largely on unlinked mentions, not clickable citations.
That breaks the usual playbook in a useful way. You don't need a link, a sponsored placement, or a marketplace ad slot to be in the answer. You need your brand to appear, in context, across the kinds of sources the model already trusts for your category. That is exactly — and only — what a ChatGPT brand mention is: a natural, unlinked reference to your brand inside existing, relevant content.
