The fitness & wellness buyer now asks AI first
Wellness has always run on word of mouth: which creatine actually works, which app sticks, which gym is worth the membership. That conversation is moving into the answer box. Instead of opening ten tabs of supplement reviews or scrolling app-store ratings, people increasingly ask an assistant a direct question — "best protein powder for sensitive stomachs," "a running app that works offline," "magnesium for sleep, which brand?" — and read a written recommendation that names a few brands. The store visit, the app download, the class booking all happen after the shortlist is set.
This is not a fringe behaviour. When OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health in January 2026, it reported that more than 230 million people ask health and wellness questions on ChatGPT every week — nearly one in three of its roughly 800 million weekly users. A meaningful share of those questions are shopping questions in disguise: what to take, what to use, what to buy. For a supplement label, a fitness app, an equipment maker or a local studio, that is the moment a brand is either named or left out.
Why "best [supplement / app / gym]" queries are the battleground
Wellness DTC and local studios sit at opposite ends of the same shift. A direct-to-consumer brand — protein, greens, recovery, apparel, smart equipment — lives or dies on whether it appears when an assistant answers a category question for a stranger. A local studio, gym or wellness clinic lives or dies on whether the assistant names it when someone asks "best yoga studio near [neighbourhood]" or "a beginner-friendly gym in [city]." In both cases the buyer never typed your brand name. The assistant had to volunteer it, unprompted, from what it had already read about your category.
That makes the recommendation surface the real battleground — and it behaves differently from search. A keyword query returns ten links and lets the shopper sort them out. An assistant returns a verdict: a short, named list with reasons. Being on page one no longer guarantees you a seat in that list, because the assistant is summarising what the wider web says about you, not ranking your own pages. AI visibility for Fitness & Wellness is won or lost in that gap between being indexed and being named.
