Car buying now starts in a chat box, not a search bar
Buying a vehicle has always been the most research-heavy purchase most people make — months of reading, comparing trims, checking reliability, hunting for the right dealer. What has changed is where that research begins. According to the 2025 Cox Automotive Car Buyer Journey Study (its 16th annual, surveying 2,300 recent buyers and released in January 2026), 19% of all buyers and 25% of new-vehicle buyers used AI tools — AI assistants like ChatGPT and Copilot, or AI-generated overviews — during their purchase. It was the first year Cox even tracked the behavior, and it arrived already meaningful.
That matters because high-consideration buyers don't ask AI one question and stop. They hold a conversation: open with "what's the most reliable midsize SUV under $40,000," narrow with "which of those is best for winter driving," then "good dealerships for it near Denver." Every turn, the assistant works from the brands and businesses it already knows. If your make, model, or dealership isn't among them, you never enter the consideration set — the shopper simply never hears your name.
Why "best [EV / SUV / truck]" queries are the new battleground
The defining automotive queries are open-ended and comparative: "best EV for long road trips," "most reliable car brands of 2026," "best truck for towing," "best family SUV for the money," "top-rated dealerships near me." These aren't navigational searches where the shopper already knows your brand. They are discovery questions, and the AI answers them by summarizing what it has read across reviews, roundups, owner forums, reliability rankings, local "best of" lists and automotive press.
In a paragraph-length answer, an assistant can only name a handful of brands, models or dealers. It picks the ones that show up repeatedly and consistently across the sources it trusts. A manufacturer with thin third-party presence, or a dealer group that lives only on its own website, gets quietly skipped — not because it lost a comparison, but because it was never offered up to be compared. That is the gap between being a name the AI volunteers and a name it has never encountered.
