AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference?

June 3, 2026 · ChatGPT Brand Mentions

Three acronyms keep showing up in the same sentence now: SEO, AEO, and GEO. They sound interchangeable, and a lot of writing online treats them that way. They are not the same. Each one optimises for a different moment in how people find things, and the differences matter when you decide where to put your effort.

This guide gives you plain definitions, shows where the three overlap and where they part ways, and explains a question most articles skip: where unlinked brand mentions fit. By the end you should be able to look at your own situation and decide which one to lead with.

The short version

SEO is about ranking a page so a person clicks through to it. AEO is about getting your content surfaced as the direct answer to a question. GEO is about getting your brand named and cited inside an answer that an AI model writes from scratch. They share most of the same foundations, but they reward different things at the finish line.

SEO: ranking a link so someone clicks it

Search Engine Optimization is the discipline most people already know. You publish a page, and you work to have it appear high in a list of blue links for a given query. The whole model assumes a results page with a clear order, a position one, and a person who scans the list and clicks.

SEO optimises for relevance and authority signals that search engines use to rank documents: keyword targeting, content depth, internal linking, page experience, and external links pointing at your pages. The success metric is a ranking position and the organic traffic that follows from it. The user still does the work of choosing which link to open.

SEO is not going away. Generative engines read the web, and the pages they read are largely the ones traditional search already indexes and trusts. Strong SEO foundations feed everything downstream.

AEO: becoming the answer, not the link

Answer Engine Optimization is about being the response itself rather than one option in a list. Think of a featured snippet at the top of Google, a voice assistant reading a single answer aloud, or a question box that resolves without a click. AEO structures content so a machine can lift a clean, self-contained answer straight out of your page.

What AEO optimises is extractability. That means clear question-and-answer formatting, concise definitions, structured data where it helps, and content organised so the most useful sentence can stand on its own. The intent shifts from "rank in a list" to "be the one answer the engine trusts enough to present directly."

AEO grew out of the era of featured snippets and voice search, before generative chat interfaces were mainstream. It is still fundamentally about extraction: the engine finds an existing passage and presents it.

GEO: being named and cited inside a generated answer

Generative Engine Optimization is the newest of the three and the one most often confused with AEO. GEO is about influencing what a generative model says when it composes an answer itself, reading across many sources and writing something new rather than quoting one page.

The term comes from a 2024 research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," from authors at Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI, and IIT Delhi, presented at the KDD conference. The researchers built a benchmark of around 10,000 queries and found that targeted methods could lift a source's visibility in AI answers by up to 40 percent. Tactics like adding relevant statistics, citing sources, and including quotations drove the biggest gains. You can read the paper itself on arXiv.

What GEO optimises is your presence inside a synthesised answer across tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google's AI overviews. The win is not a ranking position. It is being part of the model's answer, ideally named, when someone asks about your category.

Where they overlap, and where they split

The overlap is real and worth stating plainly. All three reward content that is accurate, well-structured, and trustworthy. Generative engines lean heavily on the same authority and relevance signals that traditional search uses, because they are largely reading the same indexed web. A page that is invisible to Google is usually invisible to an AI model too. This is why GEO and AEO enhance SEO rather than replace it.

The split is at the outcome. SEO wins a click on a link. AEO wins placement of an extracted answer. GEO wins inclusion in a written answer. As you move from SEO toward GEO, two things change: the user clicks less, and the engine does more of the deciding. In a list of links the person chooses. In a generated answer the model chooses, and often names a few brands while linking to almost none of them.

Where unlinked mentions fit

This is the part that traditional, link-first thinking misses. In AI answers, being named and being linked are no longer the same thing. BrightEdge, which tracks AI search behaviour, has reported that ChatGPT mentions brands far more often than it cites them with a link, on the order of roughly three times as often. They describe a widening gap where engines increasingly talk about brands by name while choosing not to link out. Their analysis is worth reading on the BrightEdge insights hub.

The practical takeaway is that a model can know your brand, trust it, and recommend it without ever pointing to your website. So a chunk of GEO is not about earning a link at all. It is about getting your brand established as a known entity that engines associate with your category, so your name shows up in the answer even when nothing is linked.

That is where natural, unlinked brand mentions come in. When your brand is referenced by name across credible, relevant content already living on the web, you build the kind of entity and citation signal that generative engines pick up on. This is the idea behind ChatGPT brand mentions as a tactic: placing genuine, unlinked references to your brand inside existing content so models encounter your name repeatedly in the right contexts. It complements your on-page GEO and AEO work rather than replacing it. If you want the mechanics of how models decide who to name, our explainer on how ChatGPT picks brands goes deeper.

Which to focus on when

You do not have to choose only one. But you can lead with the one that fits your situation.

Lead with SEO if most of your demand still comes from people clicking through to your site, you sell something that needs a landing page to convert, or your category is not yet heavily answered inside AI tools. Rankings and organic traffic still pay the bills for most businesses.

Lead with AEO if your audience asks clear, factual questions and you want to own the direct answer. Definitions, how-to steps, comparisons, and "what is" queries are natural fits. Structure your content so a single passage can be lifted cleanly, and you improve your odds in snippets, voice, and AI answers at once.

Lead with GEO and brand mentions if your buyers are already asking AI tools for recommendations in your category, especially in software, agencies, and considered purchases where people ask "what are the best options for X." Here the goal is to be named in the shortlist the model produces. That means strong, citable content of your own plus a steady presence of unlinked mentions so your brand registers as an entity worth recommending. Our breakdown of how this compares with traditional SEO lays out the trade-offs.

For most teams the honest answer is a layered one: keep SEO as the foundation, add AEO structure to the questions you can own, and build GEO visibility on top so you are present when the answer is generated rather than listed. The three are complementary, not competing. You can see where unlinked mentions slot into that stack in our how it works overview.

If you want to see how often your brand already gets named in AI answers, checking your own category prompts in ChatGPT is a simple place to start, or look at the mention packages when you are ready to build that visibility on purpose.
